Featured Exhibitor: Whispervault

Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Marilyn Evans and I create shadow boxes to inspire positivity to anyone viewing them. Nearly all contain encouraging words intertwined with mixed media components. Yarn, ribbons, glass, wood, fabrics, and more are combined artistically to inspire or console the viewer.

Where did your business name come from? Is there an interesting story behind it?
My business name, Whispervault, was inspired through the type of art I Make. Nearly every piece “whispers” a message of positivity. Often, when life is challenging, these good thoughts are buried deep within us. They’re locked in a “vault” and masked by fear, anxiety, self-doubt, and more. My mission to have positivity prevail by focusing on the good.
Why did you start working in this craft?
While I have been creating various types of artwork my entire like, I created my first shadow box shortly after my mother passed away in 2010. She was very fond of costumes jewelry and wore it nearly every day. From her vast collection, I created a shadowbox for each of my sisters any myself. When we reflect on the jewelry, the memories of our mother are fresh and alive. Through these creations, an important aspect of her life is honored. She “whispers” comfort and reminds us that she is still with us.
What motivates you to create?
When I touch a person’s heart, when tears flow because I captured the essence of what they had hoped for, when I can share in that special moment with someone purchasing one of my art pieces, the feeling is indescribable. Sharing in these moments are strong motivators to continue to create. Special orders are extremely personal and quite emotional for the recipient.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Customers will often comment about the amount of detail in the shadow boxes and the creativity in blending several types of textures to create and aesthetically-pleasing piece. I also hear how unique the shadow boxes look, and that people have never really seen anything like them before. No two pieces are the same, and I like the variety of creating special one-of-a-kind items.
Will you be featuring any special holiday items?
Yes! I am currently working on several different holiday shadowboxes with multi-dimensional detailing and am excited about the new twists!
